Shahrokh F. Shariat is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Urology at the Medical University of Vienna, Vienna General Hospital, in Vienna, Austria. He is also Adjunct Professor of Urology at Weill Cornell Medical Center, New York, NY, USA; Adjunct Professor of Urology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas, TX, USA; Adjunct Professor of Urology at the Faculty of Medicine, Charles University, Prague, Czech Republic; Adjunct Professor of Urology at I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University, Moscow, Russia; Honorary Professor of Urology at the University of Jordan, Amman, Jordan; and Doctor Honoris Causa at Carol Davila University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Bucharest, Romania.
Prof. Shariat is currently spearheading several collaborative multicentre groups (the Bladder Cancer Research Consortium, the Bladder Cancer Detection Group, and the Upper Tract Urothelial Carcinoma Collaboration), as well as prospective clinical trials. His research focuses on urologic oncology – molecular mechanisms, markers, early detection, natural history, treatment, translational, and outcomes research. Specifically, Prof. Shariat has investigated the discovery, testing, and validation of molecular markers associated with the biological and clinical behaviour of prostate and urothelial cancers. His laboratory research focuses on integrative genomics and epigenomics of urothelial carcinoma with the goal of designing personalised therapeutic strategies.
Prof. Shariat holds four patents stemming from his research into prostate and bladder cancer and is the recipient of various national and international awards, including the prestigious European Association of Urology (EAU) Crystal Matula Award and the American Urological Association (AUA) Gold Cystoscope Award 2017. Prof. Shariat is a member of 25 academic societies and serves as a reviewer of journals, meeting abstracts, and grants for numerous national and international organisations. He is Editor-in-Chief of Current Opinion in Urology and is an editorial board member of various journals, including European Urology, BJU International, the World Journal of Urology, and Immunotherapy. Further, Prof. Shariat heads a medical charity for refugees and is on the medical advisory board for two other charities. He has published more than 1,270 peer-reviewed research papers (Scopus h-index 102, 41,206 citations; Google Scholar h-index 130, 84,177 citations), over 500 non-peer-reviewed papers, and 20 book chapters.
